Inspiring the Future of STEM: SLIIT Faculty of Engineering Empowers Schoolchildren Through Robotics Workshops

The Faculty of Engineering at the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) has been actively championing STEM education through a series of hands-on robotics workshops conducted across the country over the past few years. These workshops have been organized as part of the lead-up to Robofest, Sri Lanka’s flagship robotics competition for schools and universities.

Targeting students from Grade 6 and above, the workshops are designed to spark curiosity and a passion for innovation. Participants gain practical exposure to the world of robotics, electronics, and artificial intelligence (AI) through interactive sessions focused on programming, sensor integration, actuator control, and hardware prototyping.

“Our goal has always been to foster a generation of innovators and problem-solvers. By bringing these experiences directly into schools, we help students build a strong foundation in engineering concepts while also nurturing critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration.”

— Representative, Organizing Team

These workshops are a key component of SLIIT’s broader mission to inspire the next wave of talent in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. In addition to being educational, they also serve as a valuable preparatory platform for students aspiring to compete in Robofest, a celebration of youth innovation and technological excellence.

With enthusiastic participation and overwhelmingly positive feedback from both students and educators, the initiative has evolved into a recurring program—strengthening the connection between classroom learning and real-world application in robotics.
